SHUT DOWN IN 1ST ROUND
Friday, November 03, 2017

The COMMANDOS season ended in the 1st round of the TSSAA class 6A playoffs to the same team that they began the season against.  The result in this contest was tighter than Hendersonville’s season opening 35 point loss to the Blackman Blaze, but HHS could never get going on offense in the 31 point loss to end the season.  Hendersonville’s best starting position was their own 33 yard line while Blackman started 7 of their 10 possessions at their own 40 yard line or better with 3 series starting inside COMMANDO territory.

Hendersonville would kickoff to begin the game.  The COMMANDOS would allow a first down on Blackman’s first drive before getting a stop and forcing a punt.  HHS would fumble the ball on their first offensive snap giving BHS the ball just 24 yards away from the endzone.  The Black & Gold defense would play well forcing the Blackman to attempt a 37 yard field goal that they would connect on to take an early 3 point lead.  Hendersonville would gain a 1st down on the ensuing possession as #2 Gabe Dalton would catch a pass from #6 Brett Coker; however, the drive would end with the COMMANDOS calling on #35 Jonathan Lisbona to punt.  After the punt, #20 Nate Hancock would get a tackle for loss, but the Blaze would convert a 4th down with a run and then convert a 3rd down with a run as they went down the field to score a touchdown with a 3 yard run making the score 0-10.

Hendersonville’s next possession would go into the 2nd quarter as the COMMANDOS would go 3 & out.  The COMMANDOS would fake the punt and #3 Anthony Hughes would race 76 yards to the endzone for the only points of the night for HHS.  Hughes’s TD would cut the Blaze lead to 3 points making the score 7-10 after #97 Ashton Dodd added the PAT.  Down by three, the COMMANDO defense would give up 1 first down before forcing a punt.  On this series, Hughes would run for a 1st down then Hancock would pick up a first down with a run before HHS turned the ball over on downs.  A penalty would negate a big play by BHS after they got the ball, but they would pick up a 1st down on the next play to get to midfield.  The Blaze would then convert a 3rd down with run.  #5 Reggie Grisham would break up a pass attempt, but on the next play, the Blaze would have a 44 yard touchdown run to stretch their lead back out to 10 points.  With less than 3 minutes left in the 1st half, HHS would have the ball and on the 2nd play they would throw an interception setting Blackman up with a short field.  The Blaze would take advantage of the turnover, gaining a 1st down with a run and then another by penalty before eventually scoring on an 11 yard TD run to make the score 7-24.  HHS would only have time for 2 offensive snaps before halftime.

Trailing 7-24, the COMMANDOS would get the ball to begin the 2nd half, but the Blaze defense would force a punt after 3 plays.  After a 1st down run by BHS, Grisham would force a fumble that #76 Wilson Higgs would recover to give HHS the ball.  Hendersonville could not take advantage of the turnover as they quickly gave the ball back to BHS with another 3 & out.  A reception by the Blaze would move the ball into HHS territory on their next series before pressure on the quarterback by Hughes  would help Higgs and #82 Austin Halas sack the Blackman QB and force a fumble that #87 Robert Christian would fall on to give HHS the ball back for the 2nd straight time with a fumble.  Hughes would get the ball moving for the COMMANDOS as he would have a nice run to get into BHS territory.  A penalty would move HHS back into their own territory before #13 Helton Porter would run the ball back near midfield.

HHS would fail to pick up a first down on a 4th down attempt giving Blackman the ball back around midfield.  After converting a 3rd down, the Blaze would pick up a 1st down before scoring with a 30 yard run making the score 7-31.  On the ensuing series, Dalton would have a 1st down catch and Coker would run for another before HHS turned the ball over on downs.  Blackman would have another scoring drive as the clock winded down converting a 4ht down before scoring with an 18 yard TD run.  HHS would have 3 more offensive snaps before the game ended with a final score of 7-38.

The loss ends Hendersonville’s season with a final record of 6-5.  The COMMANDOS returned to playoffs after not making a playoff appearance last season.  HHS wasn’t the only Region 4 team to not do well in the playoffs as all four Region 4 teams lost in the first round with Mt. Juliet falling at home to Riverdale 20-14 while Rossview lost at Cookeville 21-13 and Lebanon lost at Oakland 42-6.  Congratulations to Blackman for advancing to the 2nd round, we wish them good luck for the rest of their season.
