LOSS IN LAST REGULAR SEASON GAME
Friday, October 27, 2017

Riding a four game winning streak, Hendersonville was unable to get a fifth straight win in the final regular season game of the season as the COMMANDOS lost to Mt. Juliet by 20 points.  In a driving rain storm at Memorial Stadium, Hendersonville fell behind 0-13 in the 1st quarter before cutting into the lead during the 2nd quarter.  The score would be 7-13 at halftime and remain that until the 4th quarter when the Golden Bears would add 2 TD’s to get the win.  HHS would have multiple chances to take the lead, but Mt. Juliet’s defense would deny Hendersonville on four trips inside Golden Bear territory.

Mt. Juliet received the opening kickoff and would quickly get a lead that they would not give up.  On their 2nd offensive snap, the Golden Bears rushed the ball 72 yards to set up 1st and goal at the 1 yard line.  On the next play, MJHS would get in the endzone to go up by 6.  #15 Dalton Jones would intercept a 2 point try to keep the score 0-6.  Hendersonville would run three plays before punting on their first offensive series.  The Black & Gold defense would give up a couple of 3rd down conversions as the Golden Bears marched the ball 55 yards on their next possession to the endzone.  Now down 0-13, the COMMANDOS would pick up a first down with a run by #3 Anthony Hughes.  #6 Brett Coker would pass to #32 Derek Kincaid for another 1st down before the drive ended with a punt.

Mt. Juliet’s next drive would go into the 2nd quarter and they would be given a 1st down from an HHS penalty.  On the next play, #51 James Jordan would force a fumble that #77 Austin Hamblin would recover to set HHS up 30 yards away from the endzone.  The COMMANDOS would take advantage of the turnover as Coker would connect with #2 Gabe Dalton to move the ball closer to the endzone before Hughes would cross the goaline on 4th down to make the score 7-13.  MJHS would gain one first down before being forced to punt.  A Golden Bear fake punt would come up short giving HHS the ball back.  Kincaid would have another 1st down reception on this series before HHS would call on #35 Jonathan Lisbona to punt again.  Hendersonville would force a 3 & out as Jones and #22 Will Batson would come up with a 3rd down stop.  Following the punt, HHS would fumble the ball allowing MJHS to start their drive at the HHS 43 yard line.  #87 Robert Christian would have a tackle for loss before #8 Josh Gerleve broke up a 3rd down pass to end this drive with a punt.  The Golden Bear punter would have his knee on the ground as he received the snap giving HHS the ball back at the MJHS 38 yard line.  A good run by #13 Helton Porter would be called back due to penalty and the COMMANDOS, and after getting backed up, HHS could not get anything going before halftime.

Hendersonville would get the ball to start the 2nd half, but after a 1st down gained by Hughes, they would be forced to punt.  Mt. Juliet would move the ball to midfield before being forced to punt on their 1st possession of the 2nd half.  HHS would then go three & out.  Following the punt, #5 Reggie Grisham would force a fumble, but the ball would bounce right to Mt. Juliet.  The Golden Bears would then move the ball with a couple of 1st down runs as the third quarter came to a close.

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter, MJHS would extend their lead, ripping off a 20 yard TD run.  The COMMANDOS would look to answer after Hughes picked up a pair of 3rd down conversion with nice runs.  Coker would have another 1st down run getting the ball inside the 20 yard line.  Hendersonville would get as close as the 14 yard line before turning the ball over with a fumble.  The COMMANDO defense would force MJHS to a 3 & out.  After a bad punt, HHS would have the ball at the MJHS 22 yard line.  After 3 plays on this series, the COMMANDOS would turn the ball over on downs.  Mt. Juliet would pick up a 1st down before being held to a 4th down.  The Golden Bears would fake another punt and pick this one up to keep their drive going.  On the first play after the converting the fake punt, the final points of the night would be scored with a 46 yard TD run making the score 7-27 with 1 minute left on the clock.  Hendersonville would only have time to run two plays before the game ended.

Although the COMMANDOS lost to Mt. Juliet, HHS did qualify for the TSSAA class 6A playoffs with a 2nd place finish in Region 4.  The 2nd place finish means that Hendersonville’s season will continue next Friday night at Memorial Stadium.  HHS will host the #3 finisher from Region 3 which is the Blackman Blaze.  Kickoff for the 1st round playoff game next week will be at 7:00.
