VICTORY AT THE WAVEYARD
Friday, October 06, 2017

HHS traveled for their last non-Region game of the season and the team was able to get a rare victory at the Waveyard in Gallatin.  The COMMANDOS would play hard all night and use a pair of 100 yard rushers to get the 42-21 victory making their record 5-3 on the season.  A touchdown with just seconds left before halftime would send the teams to the locker rooms with HHS leading 28-14.  At the beginning of the second half the Hendersonville defense would force a punt after three plays and score giving Hendersonville the momentum for the rest of the game.  #3 Anthony Hughes and #32 Derek Kincaid would both go over 100 yards with Hughes rushing for 156 yards and Kincaid adding 176.  The pair scored 5 of Hendersonville’s six touchdowns as well.

After receiving the opening kickoff, the COMMANDOS would move the ball with runs by Hughes and Kincaid.  The drive would stall at the 18 yard line, and HHS would attempt a 35 yard field goal.  The field goal would be no good and Gallatin would get their first offensive possession.  The Black & Gold defense would come out strong forcing a 3 & out.  Hendersonville would get another drive going this time and would not settle for a field goal as they found the endzone with a 23 yard TD run by Hughes.  The drive started with the COMMANDOS getting a first down by penalty before Hughes & #7 Logan Spurrier would have nice runs.  #97 Ashton Dodd would add the point after and HHS would be up 7-0.  After the kickoff, Hendersonville would have GHS in a 3rd & long situation, and they would convert with a 72 yard pass play.  On the next snap, they would score to tie the game on 17 yard run.  Hendersonville would punt after 3 snaps on their next series.

The Green Wave would try to break the tie on their next series as they moved the ball with a couple of 1st down runs.  However, after getting into HHS territory, #76 Wilson Higgs and #8 Josh Gerleve would meet at the ball carrier to force a fumble that #52 Blaze Foster would recover to end this drive and give HHS the ball.  The COMMANDOS would capitalize on the turnover as Hughes would run the ball into the redzone, and HHS would then overcome penalties as #6 Brett Coker would connect with Kincaid for a 27 yard TD pass allowing Hendersonville to regain the lead 14-7.  The Green Wave would answer on the ensuing possession with a 52 yard TD run after picking up a couple of 1st downs knotting the score back up at 14.  A 1st down receptions by Hughes on the next COMMANDO drive followed by a long run by Kincaid would put HHS at the 5 yard line with a 1st and goal.  Hughes would give HHS the lead for good with a 5 yard TD run.  Hendersonville would force GHS to a three & out again, and the COMMANDO offense would get back to work with time running down in the 1st half.  Hughes and #2 Gabe Dalton would have catches on this drive before Kincaid would cross the goaline with less than 20 seconds remaining in the half.  GHS would receive the kickoff and kneel on the ball to go into halftime with HHS up 28-14.

The COMMANDO defense would be on the field first in the 2nd half, and a tackle for loss by #20 Nate Hancock followed by a 3rd down sack by #82 Austin Halas would force the Green Wave to punt from their own endzone.  Kincaid would do most of the work in Hendersonville’s first 2nd half possession scoring with a 12 yard run to put HHS up 35-14.  Gallatin would try to answer on their next possession as they moved the ball with 5 1st downs before the COMMANDO defense stiffened up with tackles for lost yardage by #87 Robert Christian and #14 Issiah Chandler would force the Green Wave to attempt a 4th down conversion.  Hancock would break up the 4th down pass attempt as HHS would get the ball with a turnover on downs.  Hughes would start the next possession off nicely with a run and Dalton would make a catch on a good ball thrown from Coker that converted a 3rd down on the final play of the 3rd quarter.

#13 Helton Porter would have a 1st down run to keep the drive going before HHS would fumble the ball.  GHS would move the ball following the turnover with a 1st down reception before a QB sneak on 3rd and 1; they would then have another 1st down catch.  Halas would force an intentional grounding as he chased the Gallatin QB and the penalty would put GHS in a long yardage situation.  #11 Cam Stevens would get the ball for HHS as he intercepted pass.  Following the interception, the COMMANDOS would go on a 10 play 92 yard scoring drive highlighted by several nice runs by Porter before Hancock found the endzone with a 10 yard run to make the score 42-14.  Gallatin would cut into the lead, scoring with less than 1 minute left in the game on a 17 yard pass.  Down by 21, the Green Wave would also get an onside kick, but they would only have time for only 2 plays before the clock ran out with HHS getting the 21 point win.

Hendersonville (5-3) will be off next week while the school in on fall break.  The team will practice on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday starting at 8:00 each morning.  HHS will play their next game at Memorial Stadium on October 20 against Region 4 foe Rossview (5-3).  Kickoff will be at 7:00, and this will be the first ever meeting between the COMMANDOS and the Hawks.

The Freshman team wrapped up their season last Thursday at the Waveyard and lost to Gallatin by one point 13-14.  The Freshman ended their season with a 3-4 overall record.  The JV team has one game left and will play the final game on Monday October 16 at Mt.
