SPECIAL TEAMS SPARK COMMANDOS TO HOMECOMING WIN
Friday, September 22, 2017

The COMMANDOS got a victory in their 2017 Homecoming game 31-17 over the Franklin Rebels.  A pair of big special teams plays for Hendersonville coupled with #3 Anthony Hughes’s 128 yard 3 touchdown rushing performance would help HHS stop a two game losing skid.  The win pushes the COMMANDOS record to 500 for the season and they will return to Region 4 competition next Friday traveling to Wilson Central.

HHS would receive the opening kickoff and have a scoring drive to begin the game.  A first down reception by Hughes on the 1st offensive snap would be followed by a 3rd down run by #7 Logan Spurrier that would move the chains.  A catch by #2 Gabe Dalton thrown from #6 Brett Coker would put the COMMANDOS inside the Rebel 20 yard line.  Hendersonville would eventually have to call on kicker #97 Ashton Dodd and he would connect on a 23 yard field goal to give HHS a 3-0 lead.  Franklin would pick up one first down before being forced to punt.  A couple of penalties on the next HHS offensive series would lead to a 3 & out.  Franklin would get a drive going on their next possession, but Coker would come up with an interception to prevent FHS from scoring and get Hendersonville the ball back.

This possession for the COMMANDOS would go into the 2nd quarter and HHS would be forced to punt, this would be the first of a pair of Special Teams plays that would help HHS.  Hughes would take the punt snap and go 70 yards for the first touchdown of the night.  The Black & Gold defense would bend but not break on the ensuing possession as Franklin drove down the field, but would be forced to settle for a 27 yard field goal making the score 10-3.  Hendersonville would answer the field goal with a TD of their own.  After driving down the field with runs by #13 Helton Porter and another catch by Dalton, Hughes would score his 2nd TD of the night with a 5 yard run.  Franklin would punt on the next series before HHS would run the clock out of the first half leading 17-3.

The COMMANDO defense would take the field to start the 2nd half, and after a tackle for loss by #78 Andrew Waters, they would force a FHS punt.  On Hendersonville’s 2nd offensive of the 2nd half, Coker would connect with Dalton for a 74 yard touchdown to extend their lead to 24-3.  Franklin would hold the ball for most of the rest of the 3rd quarter as they drove 83 yards on 18 plays finally finding the endzone on a 4th and goal to make the score 24-10.

HHS would answer with a scoring drive of their own after #20 Nate Hancock would pass to #42 Bailey Williams on 4th down to keep the drive going.  Two plays after the conversion, Hughes would cross the goaline for the 3rd time with a 33 yard run.  The teams would then trade punts before the Rebels got another drive going.  This drive would be stopped when #76 Wilson Higgs would pounce on a fumble to give HHS the ball.  Hendersonville would go 3 & out and Franklin would drive the ball for the final points of the game as they would score on a 16 yard run.  After the kickoff, HHS would be able to kneel on the ball and run the clock out.

Hendersonville (3-3) will play a Region 4 contest next Friday night on the road as they will travel to Wilson Central (1-5) to take on the Wildcats.  Kickoff is set for 7:00.

The Freshman team was off this week, but will play two games next week.  Both games will be at Memorial Stadium as the Freshman will host Station Camp on Monday before playing against Wilson Central on Thursday.  The Freshman games are scheduled to kickoff at 6:30.  The JV team will not play this week, but will take on Wilson Central in Memorial Stadium on Monday October 2 starting at 6:00.
