COMEBACK FALLS SHORT FOR HENDERSONVILLE
Friday, September 15, 2017

After trailing for the entire game, and falling behind 7-23 in the 3rd quarter, a comeback by HHS would not be enough as the COMMANDOS fell to Region foe Lebanon.  Hendersonville tied the game in the 4th quarter at 23 points apiece, but the Blue Devils would eat up most of the remaining clock going 80 yards on the game winning drive that lasted 17 plays and saw LHS convert four 3rd downs and one 4th down scoring a touchdown with less than 2 minutes left in the game.

In a game played at Clifton Tribble Field in Lebanon, the Blue Devils would receive the opening kickoff.  Lebanon would come out ready to play and score on their opening possession with a 4 yard TD pass on 3rd and goal to put Hendersonville down 0-7 early in the game.  On the COMMANDOS first possession of the contest, they would fumble on their second snap setting LHS up with great field position to start their second drive.  After converting a 3rd down, #82 Austin Halas would get a quarterback sack to help Hendersonville force a 43 yard field goal attempt.  #20 Nate Hancock would block the field goal try to keep the Blue Devils off the board following the turnover.  On Hendersonville’s second offensive series, they would snap the ball three times before being forced to punt.  Lebanon would have a long run on the 2nd play of this series followed by a Hendersonville penalty that would set up a 1st and goal.  The Blue Devils would have no problem getting in the endzone with a 10 yard TD run.  This PAT would fail making the score 0-13.  The COMMANDOS would get their first 1st down of the game with a pass from quarterback #6 Brett Coker to #5 Reggie Grisham as the 1st quarter came to a close.

#2 Gabe Dalton would make a first down catch as Hendersonville got moving offensively.  #3 Anthony Hughes would spark the COMMANDOS as he took the ball 53 yard to the endzone to get HHS on the scoreboard.  #97 Ashton Dodd would add the PAT to make the score 7-13.  The Black & Gold defense would force a 3 & out, and HHS would have another drive, but after converting a 4th down, the drive would come up empty as they would miss a 35 yard field goal.  Lebanon would pick up a first down on their next possession by drawing Hendersonville offside, but sacks by #14 Issiah Chandler and #78 Andrew Waters followed with a tackle for loss by #31 Tyler Dang would force the Blue Devils to punt.  Hughes would have a big run to get Hendersonville into LHS territory, but two incompletions would end the half with Hendersonville trailing by 6.

The COMMANDOS would get the ball to begin the 2nd half and the offensive would look good with 1st down runs by Hughes and #32 Derek Kincaid, but the drive would end prematurely with an interception that Lebanon would return to the HHS 24 yard line.  The COMMANDOS would hold Lebanon to a 37 yard field goal following the turnover, but on the next possession, HHS would go 3 & out.  Following the punt, Lebanon would have the ball at the Hendersonville 36 yard line.  After a 1st down, the COMMANDOS would push the Blue Devils backward only to see them convert a 4th and long to set up a 1st and goal.  They would punch it in with a 1 yard run on 3rd and goal extending their lead to 7-23.  On the next drive, Hendersonville would start their comeback after a good kickoff return by #7 Logan Spurrier.  Runs by Kincaid and #13 Helton Porter would highlight this drive before Coker would call his own number and score with a 15 yard run.  Hughes would add a 2 point conversion to pull the COMMANDOS within one score.

The ensuing Lebanon possession would go into the 4th quarter.  Back to back tackles for lost yardage by Chandler and Hancock would put the chains in the favor of the COMMANDOS and Grisham would intercept a Blue Devil pass returning it into Lebanon territory.  Hughes would score for the second time with a 35 yard run, and after Kincaid ran in for a 2 point conversion, the game would be tied at 23.  Hendersonville’s defense could not get off the field on the next Blue Devil drive as LHS went 17 plays converting 4 3rd downs and 1 4th down scoring with a 6 yard run on 3rd and goal.  #15 Dalton Jones would block the PAT to make the score 23-29.  On their final drive Hendersonville would give themselves a chance to score by picking up first downs by Porter, Hughes, and Spurrier, but Coker would get sacked on the final play of the game as HHS would fall by 6 points.

Hendersonville (2-3) will be at home next Friday night for their Homecoming game.  The opponent for Homecoming will be the Franklin Rebels (1-4).  Game time next Friday night is set for 7:00 at Memorial Stadium.
