COMMANDOS FALL TO 5A RIVAL
Friday, September 08, 2017

Hendersonville lost in Memorial Stadium to cross-town rival Beech by 14 points.  The COMMANDOS lead 14-7 in the 2nd quarter but 21 unanswered points by the Buccaneers would be too much for Hendersonville to overcome in the team’s 2nd loss of the 2017 season.

HHS would come out in this game and not be ready to play after they received the opening kickoff, Hendersonville would punt after 3 plays.  The Buccaneers would score in only 2 plays on their first possession as they busted a 1st down run on the first play followed with a 33 yard TD pass to put the COMMANDOS down 0-7 early in the contest.  Hendersonville would answer with a 7 play 70 yard scoring drive that would tie the game.  On this drive #32 Derek Kincaid would make a 1st down reception thrown from quarterback #6 Brett Coker and then Kincaid would run for a 1st down.  #2 Gabe Dalton would also make a catch for a 1st down before Coker would find #82 Austin Halas in the endzone for an 11 yard touchdown.  #97 Ashton Dodd would come on for the PAT to knot the score at 7.  The defense would also play better the 2nd time they took the field as well forcing a 3 & out.  HHS would mount another drive following the punt highlighted by runs from Kincaid and #3 Anthony Hughes, but after getting into BHS territory, this drive would come up empty as the COMMANDOS would be unable to convert a 4th and 1.

The next Buccaneer possession would go into the 2nd quarter, nearing midfield, Beech would attempt a 4th down conversion of their own, but #7 Logan Spurrier would force a fumble that Halas would pounce on giving HHS the ball.  Following the turnover, HHS would face a 3rd down at the 50 yard line, and Kincaid would break free and get into the endzone to give the COMMANDOS a 14-7 lead.  The Buccaneers would answer that score with a 14 play drive that would end with a touchdown on 3rd and goal making the score 14-14.  On their next series, Hendersonville would get the ball to midfield having a chance to score before halftime, but back to back quarterback sacks would send the teams to the break tied at 14.

BHS would return the opening kickoff of the 2nd half to midfield and take advantage.  After two 1st down runs, the Buccaneers would have a 1st down pass before reclaiming the lead with a 12 yard run.  Just as they did to start the game, Hendersonville would punt after just 3 plays.  The Buccaneers would muff the punt, but Hendersonville was unable to come up with the loose ball.  Beech would convert a 4th down on this drive to keep this series going, but the 2nd time they tried a 4th down conversion, the Black & Gold defense would get a stop.  Kincaid would get Hendersonville moving following the 4th down stop as the 3rd quarter came to a close.

Hendersonville would be forced to punt early in the 4th quarter.  On this Beech possession, they would get a 1st down on the 1st play by penalty, and then facing a 3rd and long, the would bust a 73 yard touchdown run to go up by 2 scores.  The COMMANDOS would get going after the kickoff and eventually score with a 43 yard TD reception by Hughes to make it a one possession game again.  However the Buccaneer running game would be too strong for HHS as a 53 yard run set up 1st and goal at the 1 yard line.  Beech would have no problem getting in on the next play which would be the final score of the night.  Hendersonville would still fight getting the ball to the 10 yard line, but eventually turn the ball over on downs allowing Beech to run out the clock and claim victory at Memorial Stadium.

Hendersonville (2-2) will return to Region 4-6A play next week and be on the road as they will play at Lebanon.  The game against the Blue Devils is set to begin at 7:00.

The Freshman team fell to 1-2 last week as the got beat at Beech 6-44.  The will return home next Thursday night to take on Lebanon which will kickoff at 6:30 in Memorial Stadium.  The JV team is also scheduled to play their first game of 2017 at Beech.  Start time for the JV game is 5:30 on Monday September 11.
