COMMANDOS REBOUND
Friday, August 25, 2017

After getting beat up in week 1, HHS was able to rebound and play well in their 1st game of 2017 at Memorial Stadium.  The COMMANDOS handed the Centennial Cougars a 56-21 defeat behind strong performances from #6 Brett Coker, #2 Gabe Dalton, and #3 Anthony Hughes.  Coker threw for a career high 323 yards while completing 13 passes on 17 attempts with 5 touchdowns.  He added 2 more TD’s with his legs.  Dalton caught 9 of those passes with 3 for TD’s while having 236 receiving yards.  Hughes had a monster game in all three phases, leading the team in tackles with 9 including 2 sacks, leading the team with 104 rushing yards including 1 touchdown, and catching a TD pass from Coker.

Centennial received the opening kickoff and the COMMANDO defense would force a 3 & out.  Coker would get the ball moving from the beginning by hitting Dalton with a pass to move the chains.  #32 Derek Kincaid would run for another 1st down before catching a 32 yard TD pass giving HHS their first lead in 2017.  On the next Cougar drive, it would only take them one play to answer as they had a 69 yard TD run.  The PAT would be no good leaving HHS up 7-6.  The 2nd play of the ensuing COMMANDO possession would result in another touchdown as Coker hit Dalton for a 70 yard TD through the air.  After #97 Ashton Dodd hit the PAT, HHS was up 14-6.  Centennial would convert a 3rd and 10 on their next series with a long pass that set up 1st and goal, and after the Black & Gold defense would push CHS back they would score with a 12 yard TD pass on 3rd down.  The Cougars would run a 2 point conversion into the endzone untouched to tie the game at 14.  Hendersonville would regain the lead as Coker threw to Hughes for a 28 yard touchdown.  Centennial would move the ball on their next series before #87 Robert Christian forced a fumble that #82 Austin Halas recovered to give HHS the ball back.  Following the turnover, #7 Logan Spurrier would have a 1st down run to get this drive started that would end with Coker connecting with Dalton again, this time for a 65 yard touchdown pass.  That score would put HHS up 28-14.

Centennial’s next drive would go into the 2nd quarter as they would move down the field.  After a 15 yard TD run was called back due to penalty, Hendersonville would step up and get a stop as #61 Zach Rockum would get a tackle for loss on 4th down to give HHS the ball.  Back to back 1st down runs by Spurrier followed by a 1st down run by Kincaid would have the ball moving, but HHS would turn the ball over on this drive with a fumble.  HHS would seem to have this drive stopped, but a penalty would allow it to continue and the Cougars would take advantage of the fumble cutting the score to 28-21 with a 2 yard TD run.  Hendersonville would answer with a nice drive highlighted by runs by #13 Helton Porter and Hughes and a long catch by Dalton.  The drive would end with Coker calling his own number and running into the endzone as the 2nd quarter was coming to an end.  CHS would try to get more points before halftime, but after picking up a 1st down, Hughes would get sacks on back to back plays forcing a punt that would be the last play of the 1st half with HHS leading 35-21.

Hendersonville would get the ball to start the 2nd half, and the offense would continue to play well.  Dalton would score his 3rd touchdown to end this drive with a 23 yard catch in the endzone making the score 42-21.  Spurrier would get the ball right back for the COMMANDOS as he came up with an interception on the Cougars 1st offensive snap of the 2nd half.  HHS would take advantage of the turnover as Coker would score on a 10 yard run.  CHS would get moving on their next possession before #66 Lane Smith forced a fumble that #5 Reggie Grisham would recover.  On this drive, Kincaid would have a 60 yard TD run negated due to penalty, but two plays later, Hughes would score the final points of the night with a 59 yard TD run.  HHS would force a punt after 3 Centennial plays to end the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter would be uneventful as both teams would have a possession but neither would be able to threaten to score.

Hendersonville (1-1) will begin Region play next Friday night as they will travel to Station Camp (0-2) to face the Bison.  The game is set to kickoff at 7:00 at Station Camp High School.

The Freshman team, now 1-1 after falling at Mt. Juliet will return to Memorial Stadium on Thursday night with kickoff scheduled for 6:30.  The Freshman will be playing against Station Camp as well this week.
